House lawmakers have advanced a lethal order of protection measure.

The bill lets police, a relative, or roommate petition the courts to temporarily take away a person’s guns if it’s believed they pose a violent threat. If the order is granted, the person’s FOID card would also be suspended.

Critics say this violates second amendment rights and that it should be left up to family members to keep guns away from a dangerous loved one.

Four other states already have a similar law. It now moves to the senate for a vote.
