Dr. Carlo Montemagno

SIU Carbondale Chancellor passed away Thursday morning, according to a statement from SIU Interim President Kevin Dorsey.

Montemagno announced in June 2018 that he was receiving cancer treatments and would be reducing his public schedule.

He came to the Carbondale campus as chancellor in August 2017, tasked with turning around falling enrollment numbers. His reorganization plan for the Carbondale campus became somewhat of lightning rod for controversy and disagreements with faculty often made headlines.

Montemagno was a noted and distinguished expert in the field of  nanotechnology and bio-engineering.

According to a statement from SIU Interim President Kevin Dorsey, he has “…asked the Board of Trustees to convene a special meeting as soon as possible to appoint an interim chancellor.”
