CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — In an effort to help businesses during the coronavirus outbreak, the city of Carbondale has pushed back the collection date for local taxes.

Motor Fuel and Hotel/Motel taxes are now due on April 30. Food & Beverage and Package Liquor taxes are now due on May 20. The postponement in payments would represent up to $2 million of a $25 million dollar fund.

Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry says the decision shouldn’t have any immediate, visible effects for residents or city employees.

City leaders will reevaluate the due dates as they approach to determine if another extension would be needed.

Mayor Henry also says local food pantries need your donations now more than ever.
