The Mt. Vernon Police Department is getting a new home.

City leaders approved a $7 million budget for the new facility that will be located at the corner of 27th and Logan streets. It will replace a vacated fire house that will be torn down later this year.

Officials say the current station lacks the facilities to fully operate at a modern level. It was already 40 years old when the department moved into the building in the early 1970s.

Bidding will take place this fall with a 2023 completion date expected.
