ELDORADO — Seven of the eight seeds advanced in day one of the 61st Eldorado Holiday Tournament, but that does not mean the seeds had an easy time of it.
Top-seeded Carterville opened the tourney with a 57-29 win over Carmi-White County. Harper Lustenberger led the Lions with 14 points. Game two saw our upset by seed in the opening round as Edwards County took care of eighth-seeded NCOE 68-48. Fourth-seeded Fairfield got 14 points each from Jake Easton and Owen Gruen and held off West Frankfort 43-37. Hamilton County, the fifth seed, needed overtime to beat Gallatin County 65-59.
In the bottom half of the bracket, third-seeded Herrin rallied from a 17-point first half deficit to beat Hardin County 50-44. Sixth-seeded Vienna took care of Harrisburg 64-50. Anna-Jonesboro held off the host Eagles 63-55, and Massac County rolled past Carrier Mills/Stonefort 96-24 in the final opening round game.
In the final game of the day, NCOE eliminated Carmi-White County 79-50. Javan Garrett led the Fighting Cardinals with 27 points, and Jaxen Simmons surpassed 1000 career points.
