Illinois State Police have released the names of the five victims of that fatal traffic accident Thursday afternoon on Interstate 57 near West Frankfort.
The victims are all from Memphis. They include the driver of the Ford Expedition, 80-year-old Magnolia Armstrong and four passengers: 78-year-old Coraleen Luellen, 75-year-old Peggy Armstrong, 78-year-old Helen Armstrong and 76-year-old Harold Armstrong. A fifth passenger, 59-year-old Andrea Lesure, survived the crash.
Several news outlets are reporting the family was traveling to Chicago for a funeral.
Police say the SUV rear-ended a semi driven by 38-year-old Dawit Gebermichael of Houston, who was in the northbound right lane. He was not injured.
Traffic was re-routed to Illinois 37 and 148, causing congestion in several communities, including Johnston City, Herrin and Christopher.
