COBDEN — It will be top-seeded Sesser-Valier/Waltonville and fifth seeded Elverado/Z-R in the championship game of the Cobden Girls 1A Basketball Regional.

SVW overwhelmed Meridian 61-18 in the first semifinal. Annie Wangler scored 11 of her game high 17 points in the opening quarter, as the Red Devils built an 18-6 lead after one. That lead great to 41-13 by halftime then an 18-1 third quarter triggered the running clock for SVW.

Ava Kujawa and Elyssa Schoenbaechler each added 12 for the Red Devils, who improve to 23-6 on the season.

Game two was much closer, as you might expect in a match up of the the 4 and 5 seeds. Essence Haynes’ monster game propelled Elverado/Z-R to a 44-37 win over host Cobden/Shawnee.

The Lady Falcons led by as many as 12 late in the first half. The Appleknockers rallied in the second half, closing within three a couple of times, but they could get no closer. Haynes saw to that, scoring 18 of her team’s 21 second half points. She finished with 31 points to go with 21 rebounds.

Emma Young led Cobden/Shawnee with 15, while Eva Ford added 12.

Sesser-Valier/Waltonville and Elverado/Z-R will meet at 6:00 Thursday for the regional title. The winner will advance to next week’s Wayne City Sectional.
