Illinois State Police have announced the completion of statewide next generation service upgrades.

169 Public Safety Answering Points throughout Illinois, commonly called 911 call centers, have successfully transitioned to Next Generation 911. 

NG911 upgrades the traditional 911 to a more secure, IP based infrastructure.

The transition began in June 2022 and wrapped up earlier this month.

Officials say NG911 improves how calls are handled by using a caller’s actual location instead of relying on cell towers.

NG911 supports the continued expansion and reliability of text-to-911.
