WALTONVILLE — The Carterville Lady Lions showed why they are the top-ranked team in 2A, blasting 1A #2 Waltonville/Sesser-Valier 10-0 in five innings on the road in a non-conference matchup of state-ranked teams.
Carterville senior Caidence Phillips was a problem for WSV in the circle and at the plate. The University of Illinois signee tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 14 of the 16 batters she faced. Phillips also added a two-run homer.
Tennessee-Martin signee Savannah Gibbs was 3-3 and drove in four for Carterville. John A. Logan signee Colbie Bennett also had three hits, including a two-run homer. Bennett drove in three on the day.
Carterville improves to 25-0 on the season. WSV falls to 22-3.
