Campaign for Kindness: Val Hodges from Harrisburg

It's our Campaign for Kindness!  Today, we send a salute to Val Hodges in Harrisburg.  Here's the letter we received about Val, and the work she's doing to keep school kids fed with nutritious food!

"Val Hodges runs Harrisburg's food program at our school district. She spends countless hours that no one even knows about getting things done behind the scenes for our food that goes out every week.

We send out 13,000 meals every week. Every bag has 5 breakfast items & 5 lunch items.

It's a team of us that do it every week. On Fridays, a team of 25 meet and fill the shelf-stable bags. On Mondays, another team goes to 9 sites to deliver. On the days in between, Val and the cooks work to get the fresh vegetables ready and the frozen items bagged up.

This is a picture of Val's facebook post today. The kitchen staff is getting thousands of veggies washed up and bagged for next Monday's distribution."

If you know someone who's doing something kind for others, let us know!  CLICK HERE and fill out the form at the bottom of the page!  Takes about 60 seconds!  Thank you, and let's continue to Broadcast the Good!

Pastor Troy Benitone on Herrin House of Hope

The Herrin House of Hope has seen a dramatic increase in the amount of meals served each week due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Last week, it was an approximate 400% increase in meals served to members of the Southern Illinois community.  If you can help out in any way, financially, or even with volunteering if you are healthy, you can find out how to do that at the Herrin House of Hope website!  Located on S. 14th Street, the Herrin House of Hope serves meals Monday through Saturday from 11AM to 1PM!  In case you missed it, I was able to speak with Pastor Troy Benitone with Community of Faith Church.  He helps organize the incredible volunteer effort that takes place there every day!

Aunt Verna want us all to... "Rise Above It"!

It was really good to talk with my Aunt Verna today!  I found out she's doing good down in rural Pope County with her Ray's chili, Spam, Vienna sausages, crackers and mustard.  Sounds legit to me!  She had a request for a Kenny Chesney song I had forgotten about, but I'm thinkin' "Rise Up", is gonna be our new theme song to get us through this mess we are all goin' through!

Broadcast the Good: SIWC provides Easter "goodie-bags" for kids!

I had an opportunity to talk with Pastor Melissa McKinnies from Southern Illinois Worship Center on today's #KiTC Morning Show about something GOOD!  In my never-ending search to "Broadcast the Good", I'm always looking for cool things happening in the community!  This year, Easter is lookin' a little different.  No Easter Egg hunts with the kiddos. (Bummer) So, the folks at Southern Illinois Worship Center teamed up with Senator Dale Fowler and the Fowler-Bonan Foundation with local businesses to create an Easter "Goodie-Bag" with a coloring book, new crayons, free ice cream, and more!  These bags were distributed to the Harrisburg, Carterville, and Cairo school districts earlier this week.  There will also be a pick-up location at Southside Lumber in Herrin starting today through Saturday while supplies last.  (Only go out on an essential run) And, don't miss our Rise Above It Community Easter Service on the radio, and online, this Easter Sunday morning at 7AM!

"A CITY UNITED

In the midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic, our city has found itself in an unprecedented economic crisis threatening the livelihood and future of so many locally owned businesses. In a time where so many are struggling, there is an amazing opportunity for the citizens, churches, businesses, and organizations to UNITE and help them through this. MARION UNITED is a collaborative effort to generate grants for local businesses affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We need your help! Even a little bit can make a big difference! Despite great pain and tragedy, there is an opportunity to unite and endure this struggle together. If we do, our city will shine as a beacon of hope in the midst of economic disaster. When we look back on COVID-19, we will be remembered for how we came together with a solution to lift our community during a time of uncertainty. Now is our time to shine!"
