CHICAGO (AP) — The furor over recent Chicago police shootings has legislators considering whether voters should be allowed to recall Mayor Rahm Emanuel or future officials who hold his post.

It’s an unusual proposition for a state where the recall option is almost nonexistent.

Illinois state law only addresses the recall of a governor. The provision was put in place in 2010 after former Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested and impeached.

Now a Democratic state legislator from Chicago, Rep. La Shawn Ford, wants voters to also have the power to remove the mayor of the country’s third-largest city.

Illinois is among 19 states that allow recalls of state and local officials. But unlike those states, Illinois only addresses gubernatorial recalls. Illinois municipalities can adopt their own recall ordinances but it’s a seldom-used power.
